General Information About Minnesota State Veterans Homes

There are five Veterans Homes operating in Minnesota

1. Minneapolis
2. Hastings
3. Silver Bay
4. Luverne
5. Fergus Falls
   

The last two began operations in 1994 and 1998, respectively. The breakdown of the beds is as follows: Minneapolis, 346 skilled nursing care beds and 77 domiciliary beds; Hastings, 200 domiciliary beds; Silver Bay, 89 skilled nursing care beds; Luverne, 85 skilled nursing care beds; and Fergus Falls, 85 skilled nursing care beds.

All residents of the Minnesota Veterans Homes are charged for the cost of caring for them. Each resident pays a monthly maintenance charge, which is individually determined, based on the person's ability to pay. A resident's ability to pay is based on the individual's assets, income and expenses, including the expenses of any dependents. The determinations of residents' maintenance charges are governed under the Minnesota Veterans' Homes rules, Minnesota Rules, Chapter 9050.

Each Veterans Home handles its own admissions. Currently there are waiting lists at each of the Veterans Homes. However, because of unpredictability, people are encouraged to begin the application process as soon as they think they may be interested in staying at a Veterans Home. That way, an applicant's admission file is ready for consideration when spaces do become available. Check the waiting lists.

Admissions Criteria

• Honorably Discharged Veterans
  
• 181 Consecutive Days on Active Duty
  
• Minnesota Resident (or had service credited to Minnesota)
  
• Spouses of eligible Veterans over 55 years of age and reside in the state
  
• All Applicants must demonstrate medical need
