Healthcare and Prescriptions

The VA offers several different healthcare programs for different categories of veterans.

Medical Benefits Package: this is a standard health benefits plan that is available to all enrolled veterans. It includes preventive and primary care, as well as prescription drugs. This program does not provide healthcare for veteran’s dependents or survivors.

CHAMPVA: CHAMPVA is a healthcare benefits program for

  • dependents of veterans who have been rated by VA as having a total and permanent disability,
  • survivors of veterans who died from VA-rated service-connected conditions, or who at the time of death, were rated permanently and totally disabled from a VA-rated service-connected condition;
  • and survivors of persons who died in the line of duty and not due to misconduct.

Foreign Medical Program: The Foreign Medical Program is a healthcare benefits program for US veterans with VA-rated service-connected conditions who are residing or traveling abroad (Canada and Philippines excluded).

TRICARE: TRICARE is the Department of Defense’s worldwide health care program for active duty and retired uniformed services members and their families. TRICARE consists of TRICARE Prime, a managed care option; TRICARE Extra, a preferred provider option; and TRICARE Standard, a fee-for-service option. TRICARE For Life is also available for Medicare-eligible beneficiaries age 65 and over (effective Oct. 1, 2001).
