Birth, Death & Marriage Records

Birth certificate

Birth certificates are typically used as identification for things like driver’s license, passports, proof of citizenship, school records, and social security.

You can obtain a certificate only if you have tangible interest. If someone without tangible interest comes in to pick up a certified birth certificate, this form must be filled out before our office staff can issue the birth certificate Letter of Permission (PDF)

Complete (except for signatures) the Birth Certificate Application (PDF) and bring it in to our office with either cash or check of the following fees that would apply:

  • Certified copy: $26.00
  • Additional certified copy $19.00
  • Uncertified copy: $13.00

Death certificate

Death certificates can typically be used to obtain death benefits, claim insurance proceeds, or to notify social security. You can obtain a certificate only if you have tangible interest.

Complete (except for signatures) the Death Certificate Application (PDF) and bring it in to our office with either cash or check of the following fees that would apply:

  • Certified copy: $13.00
  • Additional certified copy $6.00
  • Uncertified copy: $13.00

Marriage
certificate

If you misplace your marriage certificate and choose to purchase a certified copy, you must apply for one at the county in which the license was issued for a fee of $9.00. If you are not sure where the license was issued, you may go to the MOMS index which identifies which county in Minnesota is the official custodian of the record. If you are applying in Cass County, you may visit in person or send a check or money order payable to the Cass County Auditor-Treasurer in the amount of $9.00 per record and a note with both applicants names prior to marriage, date of marriage, and where you would like the certificate mailed. Mail these to:

Birth, Death & Marriage Records

Generally, Cass County records begin around the 1900's. Some earlier records are available, but not all records were filed with the county for recording. The State of Minnesota is also the repository of some records over the decades, spanning the years as noted.

Cass County

  • Births                1898 to present
  • Deaths              1898 to present
  • Marriage           1897 to present

State of Minnesota

  • Births                1900 to present
  • Deaths              1908 to present

A statewide system connecting all counties allows access at any county courthouse in Minnesota to statewide records for birth and death certificates for the following years:

  • Births                1935 to present
  • Deaths              1997 to present

To obtain records from other states, go to the National Center for Health Statistics.
