Frequently Ask Questions

Q If I was born in another county in Minnesota, can I get my birth certificate from Cass County?
A Yes. All births recorded since 1900 in Minnesota are available from any county in Minnesota.

Q If my mother resided and then passed away in another county in 1995, can I get her death certificate from Cass County?
A No. Deaths from 1997 to the present are in the State System and can be obtained from any county in Minnesota if the deceased resided in Minnesota and the death occurred in Minnesota. Prior to 1997, you must contact the county of residence or the county of death for a copy.

Q What do I need to bring with me to apply for a passport?
A A certified copy of your birth certificate (issued by the state or county), 2 identical passport photos, a valid driver’s license, and the proper fees. Passport Services has several specifications for the photos, so we strongly recommend they be taken professionally.

Q What if my child applies for a passport and doesn’t have a driver’s license?
A We can use a parent’s driver’s license, however that parent must appear in person. For a child under 14, both parents listed on the child’s birth certificate must apply in person with the minor, and bring valid identification. Contact our office if this is not a possibility.

Q How much does a marriage license cost?
A A marriage license costs $110.00 unless you can fill out the Statement of Premarital Education that would lower the cost to $40.00. This is a non-refundable fee payable in cash or cashiers check.
